Exciting Summer 2026: New Releases and Details Revealed
The beta cycle for iOS 26.5 is well underway, and although the updates may seem minor with only a few notable features for end users, there is a significant change on the horizon.
Recent beta versions suggest that Apple may soon start displaying ads in the Maps app. Yes, you read that correctly. Unsurprisingly, Apple enthusiasts are not thrilled about this development. While betas don’t always reflect the final product, Apple has assured businesses that they will be able to run ads starting this summer — a move that has some users exploring alternative options.
Upcoming Ads in Apple Maps
Seeing ads in navigation apps is not a new concept. However, the iOS 26.5 beta may introduce ads in Apple’s Maps app for the first time.
Based on the message displayed in the iOS 26.5 beta version of Maps, it seems that the app will show ads for local businesses based on the user’s location, search history, and map viewing preferences.
Apple emphasizes that none of this data will be tied to users’ Apple Accounts for privacy reasons. It’s important to note that these ads will be clearly marked as “sponsored” results, similar to what is already seen in the App Store. For example, a local pizza restaurant could pay for top placement in searches for “pizza,” clearly labeled as an “Ad” for transparency.
While the specificity of these targeted ads may be unsettling, it is worth considering that many users are not fond of ads in general. Several Apple fans have expressed their discontent online, with one Reddit user calling it a “speed run to ruin its reputation,” while others argue that the ad-free experience was a key factor in using the app and may switch to Google Maps instead.
Unfortunately, for those considering a switch to Google Maps, there may be disappointing news.
Ads Beyond Apple Maps
As mentioned, most navigation apps have incorporated ads for some time. It’s not surprising that Google Maps and Waze (also owned by Google) feature advertising.
Of all the features from Android that iPhone users may desire, Apple has chosen to adopt this particular aspect. While it may not be ideal, it appears that ads in navigation apps are becoming the norm.
While iOS 26.5 is still in beta, there is a chance that the final version may not include ads in Maps. However, given Apple’s confirmation of the rollout to business partners, it seems likely that ads will be implemented.
Considering Alternatives
Ads are set to appear in Apple Maps in the US and Canada soon, with the feature already being promoted to businesses in those regions. While this change may eventually extend to other areas, it’s a departure from Apple’s usual premium product approach to introduce ads in such a crucial app.
Although it may feel unconventional, adapting to ads in navigation apps may be necessary in today’s digital landscape.
This is the reality we find ourselves in, and we will need to adjust accordingly.
