Microsoft Limits Xbox Cloud Gaming to 15 Hours Monthly for Ultimate Members
Microsoft Announces Changes to Xbox Cloud Gaming
Microsoft has revealed significant adjustments to Xbox Cloud Gaming, just under a year after making cloud gaming available to Xbox Game Pass Premium and Essential subscribers. While unlimited cloud gaming has been a feature of all Game Pass plans for the past year, starting in November, Ultimate subscribers will be limited to 15 hours, Premium to 10 hours, and Essential to a mere 5 hours.
In a blog post announcing these changes, the Xbox team acknowledged the impact, stating, “We recognize that introducing limits is a meaningful change, particularly for players who regularly spend more time gaming through the cloud.” They anticipate that this modification will affect approximately four percent of Game Pass subscribers.
For those who wish to exceed the allotted 15 hours with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, additional cloud playtime will be available for purchase through the Xbox store starting in November. While exact pricing and details have not been disclosed, players will have the option to buy bundles of hours that can carry over if unused in a given month.
The rationale behind these changes, according to Microsoft, is that the cost of providing cloud gaming increases as more users engage with it for longer periods. Although this is a valid point, it comes after Microsoft initially restricted Xbox Cloud Gaming to Game Pass Ultimate before extending access to all Game Pass tiers nearly a year ago. Unlimited cloud gaming was a significant addition for Game Pass Premium and Essential subscribers, and now they are being asked to pay for additional hours.
The usage of cloud gaming by Xbox players varies, from trying out games before downloading them to accessing Xbox Series X titles on Xbox One consoles or playing Xbox games on mobile devices while away from home.
These new monthly restrictions may prompt some Xbox One owners to upgrade their consoles instead of relying on cloud gaming for certain titles. Players who frequently utilize Xbox Cloud Gaming for game trials may reconsider their usage, especially with the hourly limitations potentially complicating matters for Game Pass Essential subscribers.
As part of these extensive changes, Microsoft is also extending Xbox Cloud Gaming access to individuals without a Game Pass subscription. Players will have the option to purchase cloud playtime hours through the Xbox Store and stream eligible games they own on supported devices, providing an alternative for those seeking occasional cloud gaming access or wishing to avoid a recurring Game Pass subscription.
These enforced limits may not sit well with Xbox Game Pass subscribers, similar to the initial price hikes that Microsoft later reversed for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. However, the removal of new Call of Duty titles from the service indicated a need to balance costs. These latest changes to Xbox Cloud Gaming appear to be another effort to prevent further price increases for Game Pass.
