Google Rumored to Adopt Dual UTG Structures for Next Generation Foldables

Rumors from South Korea suggest that Google, along with Oppo and Vivo, is considering the adoption of dual ultra-thin glass (UTG) structures for their upcoming foldable devices. The Elec reports that this move could potentially propel the technology forward in the industry.

On a similar note, Apple is gearing up to launch the iPhone Ultra, which will be the first device to feature this innovative screen technology.

Following Apple’s Lead

The new approach involves placing a sheet of UTG above the OLED panel and another below it. This dual structure, with each layer possessing unique characteristics, aims to minimize the visibility of the crease on the display near the hinge.

Reports suggest that Samsung Display is currently developing dual-UTG OLED prototypes tailored to Google’s requirements, with plans for mass production in the upcoming year.

Interestingly, Samsung took a different route with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, utilizing a titanium alloy film and plate beneath the OLED panel to enhance rigidity and reduce crease visibility.
