Apple stops signing iOS 18.5, blocking downgrade from iOS 18.6

Apple Stops Signing iOS 18.5 Following iOS 18.6 Release

Apple has ceased signing the iOS 18.5 version just a week after the release of iOS 18.6. This move indicates that Apple is prioritizing the security and stability of its software by discontinuing support for older versions.

The decision to stop signing older versions of iOS is typically driven by the disclosure of security vulnerabilities in previous software versions that have been addressed in newer updates.

iOS 18.6, which was launched on July 29, introduced a range of bug fixes, security enhancements, and a resolution for a performance issue affecting the Photos app’s Memories feature. Additionally, the update brought about changes in how third-party app marketplaces are managed in the EU.

Apple has also provided a detailed breakdown of the security enhancements implemented in iOS 18.6 to ensure the protection of user data and device integrity.

For devices incompatible with iOS 18, Apple rolled out iOS 17.7.9 on the same day. With the discontinuation of iOS 17.7.8, users are now unable to downgrade from the latest version of iOS 17, further emphasizing Apple’s commitment to software security and performance.
