Blood Dungeon: A Thrilling Blend of Platformer and Vampire Survival

Every detail of Blood Dungeon looks slapdash, but its mix of platformer and Vampire survivors gets my heart thumping

The Unique Charm of Blood Dungeon: A Platformer Twist on Vampire Survivors

Immersing myself in the world of Vampire Survivors and its related games has been a time-consuming yet rewarding experience. From Deep Rock Galactic Survivors to Nimrods, Brotato, TerraTech Legion, and Soulstone Survivors, the list goes on. Rogue Genesia, 20 Minutes Till Dawn, Halls of Torment, and Swarm Grinder are just a few more titles that have captured my attention. Even the Warhammer Survivors demo has held me captive for longer than I care to admit. These games often follow a similar formula to Poncle’s original creation, with minor variations, yet I find myself drawn to the thrill of navigating arenas, evading hordes of enemies, and watching my weapons grow stronger as I progress.

However, Blood Dungeon stands out from the crowd. By blending the familiar mechanics of Vampire Survivors with the platforming elements, Messhof, the creators of Nidhogg, have crafted a uniquely captivating experience.

Similar to Vampire Survivors, enemies in Blood Dungeon approach from the edges of the screen, and your character automatically engages in combat, shooting at any threats that come too close. As you defeat enemies, they drop XP, allowing you to level up and choose stat upgrades such as fire rate, bullet count, or damage output.

What sets Blood Dungeon apart is the platforming aspect, which adds a layer of complexity to the gameplay. Instead of just circling around enemies, you must now navigate the environment strategically. Can you climb a ladder to safety? Run along a ledge to avoid a spike trap? Leap off walls to evade enemies? This shift in gameplay mechanics requires a more thoughtful approach, making the game more engaging and challenging.

Visually, Blood Dungeon has a charmingly crude aesthetic, reminiscent of a child’s doodles in MS Paint. The characters move with a sense of urgency, their animations conveying a constant state of panic. The enemies and environments are equally simplistic, with chunky platforms and basic colors dominating the landscape.

Despite its seemingly simple appearance, the movement mechanics in Blood Dungeon offer a variety of options for escaping enemies. You can extend your jumps by bouncing off walls, cling to surfaces like Spider-Man, or swing along the ceiling like a nimble acrobat.

The demo of Blood Dungeon on Steam only provides a taste of what the game has to offer, but it’s enough to leave a lasting impression. I’ve already added it to my wishlist, marking it as a must-play title that I’ll have to limit to avoid late-night gaming sessions. It’s a gem that rivals the addictive nature of Super Hexagon.
