CD Projekt boss "knows for a fact" a surge of games made purely with generative AI are coming, but doubts "whether this is really the path to follow"

The Impact of AI on Game Development: Insights from CD Projekt CEO

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly being integrated into game development, with CD Projekt’s joint CEO, Michał Nowakowski, acknowledging the rise of games created solely through generative AI technology. However, Nowakowski has expressed reservations about the effectiveness of this approach, reassuring fans that beloved characters like Ciri from the Witcher series won’t be facing off against AI-generated foes anytime soon.

In a recent interview, Nowakowski shared a conversation he had with a studio founder who boasted about running an AI-based studio capable of churning out multiple game prototypes in a matter of weeks. While this rapid development process may have its merits, Nowakowski remains skeptical about its long-term feasibility.

These discussions come in the wake of Epic Games’ announcement regarding the integration of AI models such as Claude and Gemini into Unreal Engine 6. This move aims to streamline development processes and reduce manual labor, although it falls short of creating entire games from scratch. CD Projekt’s close relationship with Epic Games has even allowed them exclusive access to Unreal Engine’s inner workings, potentially influencing the future of AI integration in game development.

Despite the potential benefits of using AI for game development, concerns have been raised about the quality and artistic integrity of games created through this method. Questions about the ability of developers to deliver on promises made through AI-generated pitches have been raised, highlighting the importance of human creativity and expertise in the development process.

Nowakowski suggests that in the current competitive landscape of game development, studios should focus on being “lean and cheap” to survive. With an ever-increasing number of games vying for players’ attention, it is crucial for studios to target their audience effectively and operate within budget constraints. Medium-sized studios without a clearly defined target audience may face the greatest challenges in this regard.

While CD Projekt may not fall into this category, the company’s ongoing efforts to regain trust following the rocky launch of Cyberpunk 2077 demonstrate their commitment to delivering high-quality experiences to players.
