Google Maps Introduces Enhanced AI-Powered “Ask Maps” Tool

Google Maps has unveiled new features for its AI-powered “Ask Maps” tool, allowing users to make personalized and conversational requests without leaving the app. Miriam Daniel, head of Google Maps, announced these updates, aiming to simplify daily tasks.

Enhanced Food Ordering and Hotel Discovery

The updated “Ask Maps” tool now enables users to order food considering dietary needs, location, and saved preferences. For instance, users can request specific dishes for pickup on their way home, with Google Maps finding suitable restaurants along the route. The feature is currently available with partners like Square and Toast, with Uber Eats support on the way.

Moreover, users can now discover hotels and local events that match their preferences, such as proximity to amenities. Additionally, users can contribute location information via the “Ask Maps” tool or the Contribute tab, including uploading photos for automatic information extraction.

These features are currently rolling out in the US, with plans for global expansion in the future.

Personalized AI Responses with Personal Intelligence

Google Maps now incorporates Personal Intelligence, a Gemini-powered feature that personalizes AI responses by leveraging data from other Google apps. This allows the tool to consider users’ existing plans, such as flights or reservations, when providing responses.

Personal Intelligence currently connects to Gmail (with the option to disable) and will soon support other apps like Calendar.

Real-Time Transit Updates and Global Expansion

Furthermore, Google Maps now provides real-time transit information within the “Ask Maps” feature, allowing users to check for delays on buses, trains, subways, and ferries. These updates are available globally in regions where “Ask Maps” operates, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, and Mexico.
