The Dangers of Cooling Down Your Overheating iPhone in the Fridge
A recent trend on TikTok has seen a surge in posts offering misguided advice on how to handle an overheating iPhone. The advice? Stick it in the refrigerator. This suggestion, propagated by self-proclaimed “influencers” with no expertise, may seem logical at first glance, especially during a scorching summer filled with extreme temperatures and wildfires.
When faced with a high temperature warning on your iPhone, panic may set in. This warning often occurs when the device has been left in a hot car or exposed to direct sunlight. However, it’s important to note that this warning is a protective measure rather than an indication of imminent danger. The iPhone is designed to shut down if it reaches a critical temperature to prevent damage to its internal components.
While the impulse to speed up the cooling process by placing the iPhone in the refrigerator or freezer may seem like a quick fix, it can actually lead to disastrous consequences. Here’s why.
Rapid Temperature Changes are Harmful
Subjecting an iPhone running at temperatures above 110 degrees Fahrenheit to a rapid drop to 40 degrees Fahrenheit or lower can result in two main issues: thermal shock and condensation.
Thermal shock occurs when sudden temperature fluctuations cause materials to expand or contract unevenly. This can lead to internal stresses that damage the circuitry, battery, screen, and camera components of the iPhone.
Condensation poses an even greater risk. While iPhones are water-resistant, they are not completely waterproof or airtight. Placing a hot iPhone in a cold environment can cause the water vapor present inside the device to condense into liquid moisture, potentially leading to internal damage.
Introducing water into an electronic device like the iPhone can have serious consequences, ranging from long-term malfunctions to catastrophic failures. In the UK, repair shops have reported a surge in iPhone repairs due to internal moisture damage caused by improper cooling methods.
Apple provides guidelines for handling a hot iPhone, advising users to follow three simple steps:
- Turn off the device.
- Move the device to a cooler environment away from direct sunlight.
- Allow the device to cool down.
Preventing your device from overheating in the first place is essential. Simple steps such as avoiding direct sunlight, refraining from playing demanding games in hot environments or while charging, adjusting screen brightness, and keeping software up-to-date can help maintain optimal operating conditions for your iPhone.
