Google’s Satellite Mission to Test TPUs in Space

Google is set to launch a satellite equipped with Tensor Processing Units aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on October 1st. This innovative approach will enable the satellite to utilize solar power in low Earth orbit. The primary objective of this mission, as stated by Google, is to evaluate the performance of TPUs in the harsh conditions of space, including radiation and extreme temperatures.

This mission marks a significant milestone in Google’s larger vision of deploying a constellation of chip-equipped satellites into space. Visionaries like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt have also proposed similar concepts as alternatives to traditional data centers on Earth. Google’s plan includes launching two more satellites into orbit next year.

Through rigorous testing, Google has determined that its TPUs can endure high levels of g-force and radiation. However, the company acknowledges that certain aspects can only be validated in space. To enhance the satellites’ performance, Google intends to evaluate a cooling system involving heat pipes and radiators while the chips are operational in orbit. Travis Beals, Project Suncatcher’s senior director of product management, mentioned to the NYT that the chips have a limited operational time of approximately 15 minutes before requiring cooldown.

In an official statement, Beals emphasized the incremental nature of exploring space as a viable environment for scalable AI compute. Google’s approach involves systematic engineering processes to validate the hardware’s capability to withstand the challenges of operating in space. The initial launch serves as a crucial learning opportunity to identify strengths, weaknesses, and apply key insights to future missions.
