Steve Clayton: Microsoft’s Retro Renegade Moves to Cisco

Steve Clayton, the former vice president of communications strategy at Microsoft, has announced his departure after 28 years with the company. He is set to take on the role of Chief Communications Officer at Cisco, under CEO Chuck Robbins.

Clayton’s career, which began during the rise of the internet, comes full circle as he transitions to Cisco, a company foundational to the internet’s story. In a statement on LinkedIn, he emphasized the increasing importance of AI in infrastructure and security.

During his tenure at Microsoft, Clayton spearheaded two significant projects: 8080 Books, a publishing imprint for thought leadership titles, and Signal, a print magazine for business leaders. Both initiatives will continue after his departure, with Clayton currently overseeing the third edition of Signal in the U.K.

From Systems Engineer to Chief Storyteller

Joining Microsoft in 1997 as a systems engineer in the U.K., Clayton later moved to Seattle in 2010 to take on the role of “chief storyteller.” This position allowed him to lead a team responsible for various strategic initiatives, including technology demonstrations for CEO Satya Nadella and shaping Microsoft’s AI communications strategy.

As corporate America embraces the role of “storyteller,” Clayton’s leadership in this area positioned Microsoft ahead of the curve. His expertise in building technology demonstrations and overseeing communication strategies played a vital role in the company’s growth.

AI-Driven Communication Strategies

In his most recent role at Microsoft, Clayton focused on leveraging AI to transform the company’s communication operations. Working under Chief Communications Officer Frank Shaw, Clayton played a key role in initiatives related to AI policy and the Microsoft–Activision deal.
