BMW USA 2025 Sales Surge, Yet Electric Vehicle Demand Slows
BMW Reports Record Sales for 2025, but Faces Challenges in EV Market
BMW of North America has announced that it achieved record sales in 2025, with a total of 388,897 vehicles sold. This marks the brand’s third consecutive year of sales growth, representing a 4.7% increase over the previous year. However, the momentum faltered in the fourth quarter, with sales declining by 3.4% compared to the same period in 2024.
Decline in Electric Vehicle Sales Signals Industry Challenges
Despite overall sales growth, BMW’s electric vehicle (EV) sales tell a different story. Full-year sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) dropped by 16.7% to 42,484 units, down from 50,981 in 2024. The decline was even more pronounced in the fourth quarter, with BEV sales plummeting by 45.5% year-over-year.
Major EV models in BMW’s lineup, including the i4, i5, and iX, all experienced declines in sales. This mirrors a broader trend of decreasing EV adoption in the U.S. market, as consumers express concerns about pricing and charging infrastructure.
Rise of Plug-in Hybrids as Alternative to Fully Electric Vehicles
While pure electric vehicle sales declined, demand for plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) surged. BMW sold 25,351 PHEVs in 2025, a 30.7% increase over the previous year. This shift in consumer preference highlights the flexibility and appeal of PHEVs as an alternative to fully electric models.
Light Trucks Propel Overall Sales Growth
BMW’s overall sales growth was driven by light truck sales, which saw a 4.5% increase in the fourth quarter and a 4.4% increase for the full year. In contrast, passenger car sales continued to decline, falling by 13.6% in the fourth quarter.
Looking ahead, BMW remains optimistic about its future prospects, emphasizing its “technology-open approach” and upcoming product launches. The company plans to introduce the iX3 to the U.S. market in 2026, along with the global rollout of the Neue Klasse platform.
The launch of the iX3 comes at a critical juncture for BMW, as the company seeks to reverse the decline in BEV sales. Whether the iX3 will be able to change the trajectory of EV sales or if consumers will continue to favor PHEVs remains to be seen, making it a key storyline to watch in the coming year.
