Ford and Lincoln Recall: Fire Risk in 116,000 Vehicles Due to Engine Block Heater Issue
Ford and Lincoln Announce Major Recall for Faulty Engine Block Heaters
Recall Details
Ford and Lincoln have recently issued a recall affecting a total of 116,672 vehicles due to potentially faulty engine block heaters. The recall includes 65,683 Ford Escapes manufactured between 2013 and 2019, 49,080 Ford Focuses ranging from 2013 to 2018 models, and 1,909 Lincoln MKC SUVs from 2015 and 2016.
Issue Description
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified a cracked solder joint inside the engine block heater as the root cause of the problem. This crack allows engine coolant to leak through, reaching the heater’s connection or cord.
Risk Factors
When the coolant evaporates, it leaves behind a salt residue that is electrically conductive. Over time, this residue can build up, leading to a short circuit or an increased risk of electrical fire. The danger is particularly high when the vehicle is plugged into a standard 110-volt power outlet without a functioning circuit breaker or ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI).
Symptoms to Watch For
Motorists should be vigilant for visible coolant spots on the pavement, a decrease in coolant levels, reduced cabin heating, engine overheating, unusual odors, or smoke. These signs may indicate a developing issue with the block heater wiring.
Resolution Process
Ford has assured affected owners that they will receive notification by mail starting in February. The communication will contain instructions on scheduling a visit to a nearby dealership. Trained technicians will replace the faulty engine block heater at no cost to the customer.
