Google Employees Petition CEO to Block Pentagon from Using AI Models

A recent development at Google saw over 600 employees signing a letter addressed to CEO Sundar Pichai, urging the company to prevent the Pentagon from utilizing its AI models for classified purposes. This initiative was reported by The Washington Post. Notably, the signatories, many of whom are affiliated with Google’s DeepMind AI lab, include more than 20 high-ranking individuals such as principals, directors, and vice presidents.

The letter, as detailed by The Washington Post, emphasizes the importance of Google distancing itself from potential negative implications associated with allowing the Pentagon to engage its AI models in classified operations. The organizers stress that the best course of action to prevent any inadvertent involvement in such activities is to refrain from undertaking any classified work. Failure to do so could result in Google being unwittingly associated with harmful actions beyond its control.

Another pertinent issue highlighted in the letter is the ongoing legal dispute between Anthropic, a tech company, and the Pentagon. The conflict arose when Anthropic contested being labeled a “supply chain risk” due to its reluctance to relax restrictions on how the US military can deploy its AI models. Noteworthy is the widespread industry support backing Anthropic’s stance, with employees at Google also expressing solidarity with the cause.
