When OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Google DeepMind cofounder Demis Hassabis, and SpaceX head Elon Musk tentatively agreed over the weekend to slow down AI development, critics immediately suspected ulterior motives. The group stated that they wanted to “pace the frontier,” endorsing a proposal that included third-party auditors, domestic lab regulations, and a global slowdown agreement. However, skeptics claimed that their true intention was to stifle competition, hinder the open-source movement, and evade legal safeguards, labeling it as a “cartel.”
Industry insiders, on the other hand, acknowledge that the situation is more complex. The proposal outlined by Amodei, aimed at addressing concerns raised by AI safety advocates, could potentially serve as an alternative to government regulation, which is unlikely under the current administration. Despite the involvement of prominent AI leaders in the initiative, experts argue that new champions are needed to spearhead efforts in this critical area.
Recent events, such as rogue hacks linked to AI agents associated with Anthropic and OpenAI, have heightened concerns about the risks posed by AI advancements. He also called Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang while Huang was onstage at a conference, telling the crowd on speakerphone that recent concerns about AI were a hoax and that the robots will not be taking over.

With no government AI regulation on the horizon, one potential option is to push companies into an immediate, measurable, and enforceable agreement. The AI Futures Project proposed AI labs giving auditors access to their compute budget and pledging to decrease their compute budget for research significantly, which would slow down AI advancement and allow other AI labs to catch up.
