Pony.ai Launches Cutting-Edge Autonomous Electric Truck for Logistics Industry
Pony.ai has recently introduced an autonomous electric truck designed for logistics fleets in collaboration with GAC Commercial Vehicle, a significant development in the realm of freight supply chains.
Unveiled at IAA Transportation 2026, this Level 4 (L4) heavy-duty vehicle represents the fourth generation (Gen-4) of Pony.ai’s Robotruck platform. It is based on GAC Commercial Vehicle’s T9 battery-electric truck architecture and is scheduled to enter mass production later this year. The initial routes will focus on long-haul freight, dedicated logistics corridors, and port transport operations.
He Xing, Vice President of Pony.ai and Head of its Robotruck business, expressed, “The global launch of the T9 autonomous heavy-duty truck with GAC Commercial Vehicle signifies another significant milestone in expediting the mass production and commercial deployment of Pony.ai’s Robotrucks.
Looking forward, we aim to deepen our partnership with GAC Commercial Vehicle, advance the volume production and deployment of the T9 Robotrucks, and introduce our jointly-developed autonomous trucking solutions to global markets.”
Pony.ai Robotruck Sensor Architecture and Kit Costs
The vehicle is equipped with an automotive-grade autonomous driving kit (ADK) featuring nine lidars, three millimetre-wave radars, and 13 cameras, enabling complete 360-degree sensing around the truck.
Significant cost reductions have been achieved in the hardware expenses for the system. The bill-of-materials cost for the Gen-4 ADK has decreased by 70% compared to the previous version, with transportation operating costs per ton-kilometer expected to decrease by 30%.
The vehicle focuses on energy efficiency and aerodynamic enhancements. Pony.ai’s control algorithms, combined with the T9 cab’s 0.4 drag coefficient (Cd), contribute to a 10% reduction in energy consumption compared to traditional haulage trucks.
Virtual Driver Compute and Chassis Redundancy
The Gen-4 Robotruck shares its central domain controller with Pony.ai’s seventh-generation (Gen-7) robotaxis, running the unified ‘Virtual Driver’ software.
The software stack has been directly integrated with GAC Commercial Vehicle’s drive-by-wire chassis. To ensure reliable driverless operation, complete hardware backups are incorporated across steering, braking, power supply, computing, sensors, and communications.
The development stemmed from a strategic agreement signed on April 16, with both partners conducting vehicle validation within five months to achieve production readiness.
Autonomous Truck Production and Global Logistics Deployment
Pony.ai has been actively involved in autonomous trucking development since 2018, creating a diverse fleet portfolio covering heavy- and light-duty platforms.
The company’s commercial logistics program engages vehicle manufacturers and transport operators across various sectors such as bulk commodity shipping, port logistics, urban delivery, and long-haul line haulage. The core software is consistent across passenger robotaxis and heavy transport vehicles.
Following the initial domestic production phase this year, Pony.ai intends to expand its Robotruck operations to European and Middle Eastern markets in the next two years. The freight expansion will leverage existing footholds established through robotaxi deployments in the UAE, Qatar, Croatia, Luxembourg, Singapore, and South Korea.
