Horizon Co-Op Adventures: Rebooting the Live Service Game
The Evolution of Horizon Hunters Gathering: A Shift Towards Traditional Co-op
Reports from anonymous sources reveal that Horizon Hunters Gathering, the live service multiplayer spin-off of PlayStation’s popular post-apocalyptic Horizon series, is undergoing a significant transformation. The game is set to be rebooted with a focus on a more traditional co-op experience accompanied by a compelling story mode.
As part of this reimagining process, a number of project staff members are being reassigned within Sony’s gaming development division. Meanwhile, a dedicated team at Guerrilla Games is diligently working on the next installment of the acclaimed single-player Horizon series.
Horizon Hunters Gathering, initially announced by Guerrilla Games, was designed to offer players a dynamic multiplayer experience set in the aftermath of Horizon Forbidden West. The game featured various gameplay elements such as episodic narrative content, a challenging Machine Incursion survival mode, and a roguelite experience known as Cauldron Descent. However, feedback from recent playtests has been less than favorable.
According to insights shared by individuals familiar with Sony’s plans to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, the decision has been made to eliminate the live service aspect of Horizon Hunters Gathering and shift towards a more straightforward co-op gameplay approach. The development team has been given a deadline until December to impress higher-ups within the company. Sony has chosen not to comment on these developments.
Despite facing challenges in the live service gaming sector, PlayStation remains committed to exploring new avenues to engage players globally. CEO Hideaki Nishino emphasized the importance of live-service games in attracting a wider audience and revitalizing the gaming market through a combination of first-party and third-party content.
Sony’s past endeavors in the live service domain have encountered setbacks, including the cancellation of Concord shortly after launch and the abandonment of live service spin-offs for popular franchises like The Last Of Us, Spider-Man, and God Of War. Additionally, layoffs at development studios such as Bungie have underscored the complexities of sustaining live service projects in a competitive market dominated by titles like Fortnite.
As for the forthcoming story-driven Horizon game, sources indicate that its completion is still several years away. Fans can anticipate its release in the future, potentially coinciding with Sony’s decision to reintroduce first-party single-player games on the PC platform.
