Revolutionary ALPINA Models Mark New Era for BMW After Takeover
The Future of ALPINA: A Closer Look at the G72 ALPINA and XB7 Models
BMW recently unveiled the new ALPINA brand with a concept car, teasing what’s to come in terms of production vehicles. The first two models set to hit the market are the ALPINA B7 and XB7, both of which were in development before the concept car was revealed. As a result, these vehicles will not adopt the concept’s styling but will showcase ALPINA’s signature features.
While details are still emerging, it remains uncertain if the B7 will feature a stretched wheelbase, considering the already spacious dimensions of the standard 7 Series. BMW is positioning ALPINA as a “Luxury Layer” above the 7 Series and below Rolls-Royce, with plans to introduce a Maybach GLS competitor (G69) in 2028.
ALPINA G72: The Luxury Powerhouse
Sources indicate that the ALPINA 7 Series, internally referred to as the G72, will offer a blend of six- and eight-cylinder engine options. While an electric version based on the i7 is not initially on the cards, the inline-six model is expected to draw inspiration from the 740 lineup.
On the other hand, the V8 variant is set to make a comeback, potentially utilizing the same S68 engine as the upcoming M760 flagship model. This strategic move aligns with BMW’s commitment to offering a diverse range of powertrains.
Introducing the XB7: A New Chapter for ALPINA
Following the G72 ALPINA, the next in line is the XB7, based on the G67 X7 platform. Emphasizing combustion power, the XB7 will mirror the design language and driving refinements of its sedan counterpart. The future G69 XB7 is expected to follow a similar trajectory, catering to discerning luxury SUV enthusiasts.
ALPINA’s Strategic Positioning
BMW’s vision for ALPINA as a “Luxury Layer” signifies a direct challenge to competitors like Mercedes-Maybach. By slotting ALPINA above the standard 7 Series and below Rolls-Royce, BMW aims to carve out a niche in the luxury automotive market. This strategic alignment underscores the brand’s evolution from an independent tuner to an integral part of BMW’s in-house operations.
