The FBI’s Cybersecurity Training Ground: Inside the Simulated Small Town

In a groundbreaking move last year, the FBI unveiled a state-of-the-art Cyber Range in Huntsville, Alabama. This innovative facility is designed to simulate cyberattacks, providing a realistic training environment for agents and cybersecurity professionals. Imagine it as a modern-day version of Hogan’s Alley, tailored specifically for combating digital crime. Spanning an impressive 22,000 square feet, the Cyber Range replicates an entire town, complete with essential establishments like a convenience store, gas station, hospital, and fully furnished houses.

This cutting-edge training facility enables the FBI to recreate real-world scenarios, offering invaluable opportunities for training and research. Each building and facility within the Cyber Range is meticulously set up to mirror a genuine town environment. Moreover, a small data center equipped with over 200 servers allows for hands-on experiences in hacking, malware infections, and detailed analysis. Crucially, all systems within the simulated town are isolated from external networks, ensuring that any malicious activities remain contained.

Participants at the Cyber Range engage in various exercises, including forensic investigations on car entertainment systems, hospital networks, and corporate security setups.
