BMW iX3 Takes on Unique Role as Mobile Photography Studio Tow Vehicle

The BMW iX3 is taking on a unique assignment as the first Neue Klasse EV from BMW, serving as a tow vehicle and a mobile power source for a traveling photography studio touring France for over a year. The journey commenced in Paris, with the EV scheduled to visit more than 30 photography festivals and fairs across the country by September 2027.

Instead of merely following the mobile photo laboratory, the BMW electric SUV will be towing the caravan throughout the journey while also providing electricity to some equipment inside through its vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, enabling simultaneous power supply at up to 3.7 kW.

The year-long tour features the iX3 50 xDrive, equipped with a larger 108.7-kWh battery to meet the demands of towing a mobile photo studio. However, the real-world range will be significantly impacted by the additional weight and aerodynamic drag of the trailer.

BMW Demonstrates iX3 Capabilities

The luxury crossover is tasked with towing a unique load, covering extensive distances between events, and ensuring continuous operation of photography equipment. This showcases the V2L technology in action beyond basic household applications, highlighting the versatility of the new iX3 beyond passenger transportation.

The electric crossover actively contributes to the studio’s energy independence, establishing a direct link between its battery and the photographic process. In addition to V2L, the vehicle also supports vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) functionalities, expanding its utility.

V2H enables the iX3 to act as a temporary energy storage system for a home, storing excess electricity from solar panels for later use. V2G takes this further by allowing the vehicle’s battery to feed energy back into the public grid, potentially generating income for owners.

The tour commenced at the Ministry of Culture in Paris and will make stops at various photography events until September 2027, including festivals like GLAZ Festival, Rencontres Image et Environnement, QPN, and more.

With its innovative approach to showcasing the capabilities of the BMW iX3, the tour is not just a demonstration of electric vehicle technology but also a practical application of sustainable energy solutions in the photography industry.
