In a surprising turn of events, Google announced the release of a YouTube app for the Vision Pro, two years after initially stating they had no plans to do so. The official YouTube app has finally landed on the visionOS App Store, allowing owners of Apple’s headset to enjoy YouTube videos in standard and spatial formats, including 3D 360 and VR180. The new M5 Vision Pro even supports 8K videos, a feature not available on the older model due to hardware limitations.

Despite the slow adoption of the Vision Pro by developers, the launch of the YouTube app marks a significant change in attitude towards the headset. Initially, major names like Netflix and YouTube showed reluctance to support the new device, but YouTube’s sudden decision to release an app for the Vision Pro has been met with enthusiasm.

The delay in launching the YouTube app may have been due to the quality of content available on the platform. Apple had previously expressed concerns about the suitability of YouTube’s 360 and 3D videos for the Vision Pro, but it seems that improvements have been made over the past two years.

Apple’s own library of Apple Immersive Video content has also grown significantly, making it less risky for them to collaborate with YouTube. The arrival of the YouTube app on the Vision Pro was announced by Apple’s PR spokesperson, indicating a potential partnership between Apple and Google.

Initial reviews of the YouTube app suggest that it provides basic functionality for watching VR180 and 3D 360 content, but lacks some features available on the Safari browser. However, the ability to download videos for offline viewing is a standout feature of the app, making it a valuable addition for Premium subscribers.
