Warhound Secures $200M Investment to Develop Advanced Military Canines Equipped with Anduril Technology
Revolutionizing Military and Law Enforcement with Genetically Engineered War Dogs
Colossal Biosciences’ Ben Lamm and Anduril’s Palmer Luckey have unveiled an ambitious project to genetically engineer war dogs for crucial roles in the U.S. military, law enforcement, and emergency response teams. This groundbreaking initiative, known as Warhound, has emerged from stealth mode with an impressive $200 million funding injection from prominent investors like Sequoia, 8VC, Corner Ventures, and In-Q-Tel, a venture firm with ties to the CIA and other U.S. intelligence agencies. The successful funding round has propelled Warhound to a valuation of $1.2 billion.
Warhound’s envisioned dogs, although not yet physically existent, are primed to undertake dangerous or challenging tasks that are beyond human capabilities or traditional machinery, such as bomb detection, specialized searches, and other high-risk operations. The company’s launch announcement highlighted a critical statistic – more than 80% of the U.S. military’s working dogs are sourced from Europe, with less than half meeting the required standards for service.
With the dwindling supply of proficient working dogs and an increasing reliance on foreign sources, Warhound seeks to revolutionize this landscape. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, Colossal aims to genetically engineer dogs with specific traits tailored for demanding missions, as outlined in a recent press release.
Ben Lamm shared in an interview with TechCrunch how the collaboration with Palmer Luckey stemmed from a mutual desire to enhance support for the military’s working dogs. Recognizing the challenges faced in breeding and training working dogs, Lamm highlighted inherent health issues and performance limitations that often hinder their effectiveness in service.
Colossal’s innovative approach involves studying top-performing working dog breeds like the Belgian Malinois and German Shepherd, extracting cell lines, and establishing a biobank for genetic manipulation. By selectively editing genes to enhance desirable traits and eliminate impediments, the company aims to create a new breed of highly specialized dogs for critical operations.
Complementing the genetic enhancements, Anduril will provide essential software and hardware support, including protective gear like vests and goggles, to enhance situational awareness and coordination for both the dogs and their handlers. This integrated approach aims to improve the safety, health, and performance of the dogs, ultimately enhancing their operational effectiveness.
Despite Palmer Luckey’s partnership in the venture, he holds no equity stake in the business, as confirmed by Lamm. Colossal, on the other hand, retains ownership and supports the venture through technology licensing agreements.
Notably, Colossal is renowned for its de-extinction initiatives, focusing on resurrecting extinct species like the dodo and the mammoth. Leveraging AI and advanced genetic technologies, the company has made significant strides in cloning and preserving animal genes.
The imminent cloning and incubation of the first batch of dogs, slated for early next year, mark a pivotal milestone for Warhound. Partnering with Viagen, another Colossal subsidiary with a proven track record in cloning technology, the venture is on track to commence operational service within the next two years.
While pricing details for the genetically engineered dogs are yet to be finalized, Warhound anticipates catering to various sectors, including first responders, the Department of Defense, military units, and law enforcement agencies. Lamm reassured that the company has engaged with multiple government entities to ensure regulatory compliance and approval.
Addressing concerns about civilian safety with the deployment of genetically enhanced dogs, Lamm emphasized rigorous training protocols akin to military working dogs, with oversight from the American Humane Society. Warhound is collaborating with the Society to certify its training programs and ensure a smooth transition for retired military dogs into suitable adoption programs.
As Warhound embarks on this groundbreaking venture, it underscores a commitment to innovation, safety, and ethical standards in harnessing genetic engineering for national security and public safety initiatives.
