Amazon renames Kindle Unlimited to Kindle Plus and expands access to audiobooks

The Evolution of Amazon’s Subscription Service: Kindle Plus

Amazon has joined the trend of enhancing subscription services by rebranding Kindle Unlimited to Kindle Plus. This new subscription model continues to provide unlimited access to a curated collection of ebooks, comics, and magazines from the Kindle catalog for $11.99 per month. In addition to the existing offerings, thousands of titles now come with companion audiobooks, allowing users to seamlessly switch between reading and listening. Notably, Kindle Plus introduces “virtual voice” audiobooks narrated by AI, as reported by ZDNet.

According to Amazon spokesperson Josh Pflug, Kindle Plus maintains its promise of a superior reading experience with access to millions of titles, now enhanced with thousands of audiobooks in the U.S. catalog at no extra charge, as stated in an email to The Verge.

Kindle Plus remains a separate subscription from Amazon Prime, allowing users to borrow up to 20 titles simultaneously without any return dates. Amazon has also opened the door for authors using Kindle Direct Publishing to make their audiobooks accessible to Kindle Plus subscribers.

New titles enrolled in KDP Select will automatically include virtual voice audiobooks, while authors can choose to opt-in AI narrators for previously published works. For those preferring human narrators, audiobooks created through Audible’s Audiobook Creation Exchange (ACX) will soon be available on Kindle Plus for U.S. subscribers, with plans for global expansion by Amazon.
