No, the iPhone Duo isn’t a small phone

The iPhone Duo: A Small Phone or a Heavy Tablet?

After reviewing the iPhone Duo, many Mini fans were curious about its potential as a small phone that transforms into a tablet due to its Mini-ish 5.4-inch cover screen. Unfortunately, the Duo does not fulfill this expectation, disappointing those seeking a compact device.

Contrary to its size, the Duo is described as thick and heavy, making its weight noticeable during everyday use. Compared to the 13 Mini, the Duo feels dense, challenging users to adapt to its substantial build. The 13 Mini, in contrast, appears almost unbelievably light in comparison.

Additionally, the Duo’s wider front panel, measuring 84.1mm versus the 64.2mm of the 13 Mini, presents ergonomic challenges in thumb reachability. Despite efforts to alleviate this issue by positioning controls on the right side and introducing the reachability feature, accessing certain functions single-handedly remains difficult. While the Duo offers a larger onscreen keyboard compared to the Mini, the overall user experience may feel compromised.

It is essential to differentiate between liking a small phone and a small screen. While a larger screen may offer advantages, some users prefer the convenience of a compact phone. The iPhone Duo presents a unique tradeoff, combining a small external screen with the option of a significantly larger display when needed, albeit attached to a bulky device.

Despite initial skepticism, using the Duo proved to be a manageable experience once expectations were adjusted. Those anticipating a device that seamlessly transitions from a small phone to an iPad Mini alternative may be underwhelmed. However, approaching the Duo as a compromise between a compact screen and the occasional need for a larger display offers a more accurate perspective.
