Tesla Cancels Plans to Bring Cybertruck to Australia

Tesla has officially announced that it will not be bringing the Cybertruck to Australia, bringing an end to years of speculation about the futuristic electric truck’s local availability.

Local deposit holders have been informed by the automaker that their deposits will be refunded. A letter sent to customers confirmed that production plans for the Australian market have been discontinued.

Tesla is offering affected customers a small consolation in the form of a complimentary one-year Full Self-Driving Supervised subscription when they purchase a new Model 3 or Model Y.

The cancellation of the Cybertruck’s Australian launch was somewhat expected, as the pickup is currently only produced in left-hand drive and is not available in any right-hand-drive market. Adapting it for Australia would require significant modifications.

Tesla Australia has not provided further details, but the Cybertruck has reportedly been removed from the company’s local website.

The electric pickup was unveiled in the US in late 2019, with Tesla Australia opening reservations for interested customers in November of that year for a $150 deposit.

After a long wait, local reservation holders will now have to settle for a refund instead of the distinctive Cybertruck they originally signed up for.
