iPhone Duo Production Surges by 44% to Meet High Demand
Apple has made a significant move to address the overwhelming demand for its new foldable iPhone Duo. Reports suggest that the tech giant has increased its order of iPhone Duo units from its supply chain to meet the extraordinary demand.
When the iPhone Duo went up for preorder, it sold out within seconds, causing delivery dates to be pushed back to January 2027 for some models. Even the most expensive 2 TB configuration was showing a delivery date of January 25 by 8:30 a.m. ET on the preorder day. Limited stock levels in Apple Stores further added to the challenge of securing the new device.
Despite Apple’s reluctance to disclose specific details about supply and demand, reports over the past few months have indicated that suppliers have struggled to meet the production demands efficiently. Initially, Apple had ordered between 7 and 8 million units for sale in 2026, with a subsequent increase to 10 million units. However, challenges in achieving desired production yields forced Apple to revise its target to 6 to 8 million units by late September.
Quality control issues have been a significant factor affecting production yields, with suppliers reportedly struggling to meet Apple’s high standards. Suggestions have been made to relax these standards to improve production efficiency. The decision to relax quality requirements could potentially accelerate mass production of the iPhone Duo.
Yields refer to the percentage of devices that meet Apple’s quality standards during the manufacturing process. Lower yields mean more rejected devices that do not meet the required quality benchmarks. The complexity of hinge mechanisms and foldable OLED panels in the iPhone Duo has contributed to lower production yields, with reports indicating yields as low as 60%.
Recent reports from DigiTimes suggest that Apple has instructed Foxconn and component manufacturers to increase production to 14 million devices, up from the previous level of 9.7 million. However, these orders are projected for the next 12 months, indicating a long-term production adjustment rather than an immediate solution to the supply chain challenges.
While efforts are being made to ramp up production, component shortages, such as the A20 Pro chips, may impact the overall manufacturing process. Reports also suggest that Apple may have redirected resources from iPhone 18 Pro manufacturing to prioritize iPhone Duo production, indicating a strategic shift in response to demand dynamics.
DigiTimes’ estimates are primarily based on component orders, highlighting Apple’s proactive approach to stockpiling parts to address production challenges. The focus is on resolving yield issues and ensuring a steady supply of the iPhone Duo in the market.
In conclusion, Apple’s proactive measures to address supply chain challenges and meet the high demand for the iPhone Duo reflect the company’s commitment to delivering innovative products to its customers. The strategic adjustments in production targets and quality control standards aim to enhance the overall customer experience and ensure timely availability of the highly anticipated foldable device.
