Apple’s Podcasts App to Feature Seamless Audio and Video Podcast Switching

Apple is set to enhance its Podcasts app by introducing a new feature that will allow users to effortlessly transition between audio and video podcasts using HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology. This upgrade will enable listeners to switch to a horizontal video format of their favorite podcasts while also providing the option to download video episodes for offline viewing.

By offering this flexibility to users, Apple aims to retain its audience and prevent them from seeking alternative platforms for consuming video content. The popularity of video podcasts is on the rise, with YouTube reporting that over 1 billion people watch podcasts on their platform monthly. Competitors like Spotify and Netflix are also investing heavily in video content, signaling a shift in the podcast industry towards visual storytelling.

The enhanced features of Apple’s Podcasts app are scheduled for an official release this spring, with beta testing available from Monday for iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, and visionOS 26.4 users. Additionally, HLS video support will be extended to the web version of the Podcasts app in the coming months. Apple assures a seamless integration of video content into existing podcasts, allowing creators to monetize through sponsorships and dynamic advertising opportunities.
