BMW Japan Introduces Limited Edition Shadow Series

Special editions are a common sight in the BMW world, and one of the most popular choices is the “blacked-out” version. Japan is set to receive limited editions of select models, expanding the lineup with the BMW X3 xDrive20d Shadow Edition this year.

The BMW X3 Shadow Edition, like its counterparts, boasts a range of darkened details. Limited to the X3 20d xDrive trim line, it offers 145 kW (194 horsepower) and 400Nm (295 pound-feet) of torque. The SUV features blacked-out 21-inch wheels, M logos, M Sport Brakes, M seat belts, and a black kidney grille. Additional perks include ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and front/rear heated seats.

BMW Japan has also extended the Shadow treatment to other models. The BMW X1 comes in two powertrains, sDrive18d and xDrive20d, both featuring blacked-out elements. The X1 Shadow Edition includes a heated steering wheel, Harman Kardon speaker system, and 19-inch alloy wheels. The BMW 3 Series lineup, including the 3 Series Touring, will also receive the Shadow treatment, offering customers a wide range of choices.

Pricing and Production Details

Reservation for Shadow Edition cars is now open, with the 3 Series available from Spring 2026. Production is limited, with only 700 units of the X1 xDrive20d Shadow Edition and 450 units of the X3 Shadow Edition available. The 3 Series seems to have no production constraints at the moment.

Prices for the Shadow Edition models start at 6,290,000 yen (around $40,500) for the X1 sDrive18d, 6,790,000 yen (around $43,750) for the X1 xDrive20d, and 9,350,000 yen (around $60,250) for the X3. The 3 Series Shadow Edition models start at 7,150,000 yen (around $46,090).

BMW Japan’s introduction of the Shadow Edition to the X3 hints at the success of previous iterations. With the possibility of expansion to other models like the MINI Countryman, X5, and X6, the Shadow Edition series is likely to continue captivating automotive enthusiasts.
