Apple Wallet student IDs expanding to major new school next year

The University of Texas recently announced that it will be introducing digital University IDs in the upcoming academic year. These digital IDs will be integrated with Apple Wallet, allowing students to access buildings, make dining purchases, and more with ease.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Student Government, has been a long-standing vision of the students. The university is set to launch the digital IDs during the 2027-2028 academic year, offering access to various campus services such as buildings, dining, events, library services, and more. The digital IDs will be distributed through the MyUT portal and can be added to both Apple Wallet and Android Wallet.

The development of the digital ID initiative is currently in the feedback and discovery phase, with design and development to follow. The university aims to provide a smooth transition for the Longhorn community as they adapt to using digital IDs alongside physical ones.

One of the key advantages of digital IDs is their cost-effectiveness and enhanced security compared to physical IDs. Students will no longer have to pay fees for lost IDs, and the university will reduce card production costs. Digital credentials are tied to personal devices, reducing the risk of loaned or shared cards and enhancing convenience and security.

UT students can find more information about the digital IDs on the Enterprise Technology website. Apple first introduced support for student IDs in Apple Wallet with iOS 12 and watchOS 5, with support expanding gradually. The University of Texas at Austin, with over 55,000 students, represents a significant expansion of the Apple Wallet student ID platform.
