Blind Spot: Seat Sensors’ Failure to Detect Obstructions
KIA America Recalls 568 2027 Telluride Hybrid Models Due to Power Seat Issue
KIA America has issued a recall for approximately 568 2027 Telluride Hybrid models due to a power seat-related problem. The issue involves the seats not detecting obstructions and continuing to move during operation, which poses a risk of injuries to occupants.
Details of the Recall
According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected models include the SX Prestige and X-Line SX Prestige variants equipped with the optional Executive Package. These vehicles were manufactured between February 2, 2026, and March 13, 2026. The power second-row seats in these models may continue to move even if there is an obstruction or someone in place.
Impact on Safety
The malfunctioning power seats pose a significant safety risk, especially when an occupant is in the seat or entering/exiting from the rear seats while the folding operation is in progress. This could result in serious injuries, and in some cases, fatalities. The cause of the issue is currently under investigation, with no warning signs identified yet.
Recall Population and Resolution
The recall population was identified through a review of Kia vehicle production records, as the affected vehicles were not listed in VIN records. Owners who suspect their vehicle may be part of the recall are advised to contact Kia’s Customer Care Center or their nearest dealership for more information.
Preventive Measures
While the remedy for the power second-row seats is still in development, Kia advises customers to ensure that children are not in the rear seats or second rear seating area during the power-folding process. Additionally, they should avoid accidentally pressing the power second-row switches to prevent any incidents.
Notification and Timeline
Dealer notifications for the recall ceased on March 20, 2026. Owners will receive interim notifications starting from April 6, 2026, with details of the planned remedy expected to be communicated by May 19, 2026.
