Apple’s Latest Innovation: Automatic Audio Switching for Third-Party Accessories
Apple is currently testing a new framework that will bring automatic audio switching to third-party audio accessories as part of its efforts to comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act. This new framework, known as AudioAccessoryKit, will allow third-party accessory makers to share headphone data with the system in order to support automatic audio switching.
In a recent support document, Apple confirmed that this framework will enable iOS to intelligently route audio based on whether the third-party accessory is being worn, similar to the functionality offered by AirPods. However, this feature is still in development and is currently only available to developers and EU users.
Developers will need to pair their accessory using AccessorySetupKit, register it with AudioAccessoryKit, and declare which features it supports, such as automatic audio switching and placement detection. The accessory’s companion app will then be responsible for reporting events to the system, such as when a user puts on or takes off their headphones, so iOS can adjust the audio accordingly.
According to the documentation, Bluetooth accessories can also report which devices they are connected to, helping the system determine the correct audio source in situations where multiple devices are in use. The support document states that AudioAccessoryKit and its associated APIs are compatible with iOS 26.4 or later, as well as iPadOS 26.4 or later.
