Stretched BMW 3 Series G58 Entering Production In April 2027?

Exciting News: Long-Wheelbase BMW 3 Series G58 in the Works

  • BMW is gearing up to introduce a long-wheelbase version of the eighth-generation 3 Series Sedan, known internally as the G58.
  • While the standard 3 Series G50 is set to be unveiled in 2026, the larger G58 model may not make its debut until the following year.
  • Production of the G58 is expected to commence in around a year, with plans to offer the car beyond the Chinese market.

Since the F35 era, BMW has been offering a long-wheelbase variant of the 3 Series in China, starting with the stretched F30 in 2012 and later the G28 in 2019. The electric i3 NA8 is also on the horizon for 2022. Now, reports suggest that BMW is working on the next iteration, the G58.

According to a recent Bimmer Post report, the upcoming long-wheelbase 3 Series could go into production in China by April 2027. With BMW’s history of selling extended sedans globally, the G58 might also find its way to other markets.

In China, BMW is rumored to kick off the G58 lineup with the 325L and 330L models, both powered by the versatile B48 engine in varying configurations. Additionally, an electric i3 NA8 is in the pipeline, possibly arriving before the petrol-powered counterparts.

Regrettably, it seems unlikely that either the gasoline or electric versions of the G58 will make their way to the United States. BMW’s product chief, Bernd Körber, has cited insufficient demand for long-wheelbase models in North America, ruling out potential U.S. releases for models like the 2 Series Gran Coupe and 5 Series.

Not limited to sedans, BMW has extended wheelbase offerings across its SUV lineup, with plans to introduce a China-specific version of the next-gen X5, as confirmed by CEO Oliver Zipse.

While BMW’s long-wheelbase strategy echoes that of competitors like Audi and Mercedes, the brand distinguishes itself with opulent rear seating and premium interiors. The upcoming G58 could follow suit, offering luxury features tailored for various markets.

As BMW continues to innovate and expand its long-wheelbase portfolio, the automotive landscape evolves with segment-blurring models that cater to discerning customers worldwide.
