BYD Ramps Up Australian Shipments to Meet Demand During Fuel Price Spike
BYD’s Response to Record Fuel Prices by Shipping 30,000 Vehicles to Australia
In a strategic move to address the surge in demand due to soaring fuel prices, BYD is set to ship 30,000 vehicles to Australia in May and June. This response comes after the brand achieved a remarkable third-place finish in overall sales last month.
This bulk order, which is triple the brand’s typical shipment volume, follows a significant increase in sales and introduces new models like the Shark 6 ute and Sealion 8 seven-seat SUV to the market.
Speaking at the 2026 Melbourne motor show through an interpreter, BYD Asia Pacific managing director Liu Xueliang expressed the company’s commitment to meeting the unprecedented customer demand by preparing to ship a record number of vehicles.
Last month, BYD achieved its all-time best delivery of 7217 vehicles locally, positioning itself behind only Toyota and Kia. This marked a 50% increase year-on-year following strong deliveries in January and February.
BYD’s move to increase its shipment volume aims to facilitate faster deliveries to customers and dealers, including for its luxury brand, Denza.
The company’s year-to-date sales until March totaled 17,541, reflecting a notable 100.1% increase compared to the same period last year. With a target to deliver its 100,000th vehicle in Australia this year, BYD is on track to maintain its strong sales momentum.
The Sealion 7 electric SUV emerged as BYD’s best-seller, outperforming the Shark 6 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) ute and the Sealion 6 PHEV SUV. This success contributed to Chinese-made vehicles outselling all others in February 2026.
Following a remarkable sales performance in 2025, BYD aims to secure a spot among the top three brands in 2026 with the introduction of new models. The company’s proactive approach to meeting market demand underscores its commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction.
