As Apple progresses towards the anticipated release of iOS 26.5 in May, the tech giant has rolled out iOS 26.4.2 to address a privacy issue and provide general bug fixes and security updates.

The release notes for iOS 26.4.2 are concise, mentioning a fix for a specific problem related to notifications:

Notifications marked for deletion could be unexpectedly retained on the device

This issue was significant enough for Apple to release iOS 18.7.8 with the same fix. The corresponding iPadOS updates, 26.4.2 and 18.7.8, have also been made available, indicating that the problem primarily affected iPhones and iPads.

While most users may not have noticed the problem as deleted notifications disappeared from view, Apple’s emphasis on addressing it underscores its importance. The retention of notifications could potentially expose sensitive information, ranging from personal messages to login codes and financial data.

It remains unclear what Apple means by “retained” in this context, but recent reports suggest that deleted Signal messages were extracted from an iPhone’s Notification database by the FBI, highlighting a potential security vulnerability.

The FBI was able to forensically extract copies of incoming Signal messages from a defendant’s iPhone, even after the app was deleted, because copies of the content were saved in the device’s push notification database.

The persistence of these notifications even after app deletion raises concerns about data security on iOS devices. Despite Signal’s reputation as a secure messaging app, vulnerabilities like these underscore the importance of vigilance in managing notification settings, particularly for apps handling sensitive information.

While iOS 26.4.2 aims to rectify this issue, users are advised to review their notification settings, especially when using secure messaging apps like Signal, to prevent potential leaks of personal data through notifications.
