Automakers have been eager to adopt Android Automotive, but Ford has taken a different approach by choosing Apple Maps for its new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform. This decision sets Ford apart from the trend of using Google built-in and Apple CarPlay Ultra. Ford will still develop its own software stack, with Apple Maps handling the navigation aspect of its integrated systems. The platform will remain uniquely Ford’s.

Apple’s new MapKit for Automotive SDK is the key to this collaboration, allowing Ford to integrate intelligent EV routing and its BlueCruise ADAS system. This integration will enable Ford’s in-car systems to communicate directly with Apple Maps for functions like battery preconditioning, EV ranges, and semi-autonomous driving on major highways.

While there hasn’t been much information released by Ford since the joint announcement with Apple in July, Alan Clarke, Ford’s vice president of advanced EV development projects, recently discussed the upcoming Fathom electric truck. This vehicle will be the first to feature the new UEV platform.

Clarke explained that Ford thoroughly evaluated mapping platforms from Apple, Google, and others before choosing Apple Maps for the Fathom. Performance, capabilities, cost, and quality were all factors considered in the decision-making process.

He praised Apple Maps for its significant improvement in recent years and emphasized Apple’s close collaboration with Ford. The flexibility and cooperation of Apple’s team allowed for seamless integration of Apple Maps into Ford’s UEV experience.

Clarke highlighted the aesthetic appeal of Apple Maps and predicted it would be a standout feature for customers using the Fathom’s large display. Despite the embedded Apple Maps, the Fathom will also support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for additional navigation options.

The Ford Fathom is set to open for preorders in early 2027, with a starting price of $29,945. Ford aims to sell 100,000 vehicles in the first year of market release, as reported by Car and Driver and The Wall Street Journal.
