Laughing in Terror: The Frighteningly Funny Apple TV Horror Series
Kate O’Flynn on the Connection Between Comedy and Horror
Kate O’Flynn believes that comedy and horror are closely related. According to her, both genres are most effective when they surprise the audience with unexpected elements, whether it’s a laugh or a scare that comes out of nowhere. For O’Flynn, mixing comedy and horror in the new Apple TV series Widow’s Bay makes perfect sense, as they enhance each other. She explains, “You’re never on steady ground. Your guard is down, and you’re vulnerable to a laugh or a cry or a scream. It’s all up for grabs.”
Widow’s Bay is set to start streaming on Apple TV on April 29th. The series revolves around an island off the coast of New England with a haunted history. Despite its small-town charm, the island is plagued by myths, ghost stories, and a rumored curse that prevents anyone born there from leaving without facing death. The town’s mayor, Tom Loftis (played by Matthew Rhys), is determined to transform the island into a tourist hotspot, oblivious to the ominous signs around him. In the first episode, a menacing fog descends on the town, but Tom’s focus is on impressing a visiting New York Times travel writer.
The mastermind behind Widow’s Bay is showrunner Katie Dippold, known for her work in comedy on shows like Mad TV and Parks & Recreation, as well as movies such as The Heat and the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot. According to Dippold, successfully blending horror and comedy is a rare feat, with many attempts failing to deliver on either front. She cites An American Werewolf in London as a prime example of a film that struck the perfect balance between terror and humor. Dippold’s goal with Widow’s Bay was to ensure that both genres complemented each other without undermining the story or the tension.
As the series unfolds over its 10 episodes, Widow’s Bay delves into various subgenres within the horror realm. While exploring the town’s dark history, each episode introduces different characters and storylines that touch on themes reminiscent of films like Midsommar, Friday the 13th, and works by Stephen King. From lumbering killers to sea witches and even a killer clown, the show offers a diverse range of horror elements. Dippold ensures that the comedic elements are strategically woven into the narrative to provide relief and relatability amidst the escalating tension.
For the cast of Widow’s Bay, navigating the hybrid nature of the show meant approaching it as a cohesive and unified project. Matthew Rhys, who plays Tom, emphasizes the importance of portraying the characters as real people facing real problems, regardless of the genre. By staying true to the authenticity of the story, the actors aim to engage the audience and keep them invested in the characters’ journeys. Stephen Root, who portrays Tom’s superstitious rival, highlights the need to focus on the reality of the situation rather than getting caught up in specific genre conventions.

Dippold believes that a background in comedy can be beneficial for creating effective horror narratives. She points out that acclaimed directors like Jordan Peele and Zach Cregger transitioned from sketch comedy to horror with great success, infusing their films with a sense of playfulness. Dippold appreciates horror that incorporates elements of fun without compromising on the scare factor.
Ultimately, both comedy and horror share a common goal: to evoke a visceral response from the audience. While their approaches may differ, the end result often leads to similar reactions. O’Flynn notes that fear can sometimes manifest as laughter, creating a fine line between terror and hysteria. For Dippold, crafting a compelling horror scene is akin to constructing a well-crafted joke, as both require a keen sense of timing and energy.
The seamless integration of comedy and horror in Widow’s Bay reflects the creators’ dedication to delivering a unique and engaging viewing experience that transcends genre boundaries. By blending elements of humor and terror, the series invites audiences to explore the intricate relationship between laughter and fear in a captivating and unpredictable narrative.
