BMW’s Transition Towards Electric Vehicles: A Detailed Overview

Key Highlights

  • From 4.1% in 2021 to 17.9% in 2025, the share of EVs in total BMW Group sales has significantly increased.
  • During the first half of 2026, EVs represented 17.7% of total deliveries across BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce brands.
  • Despite a 14.6% decline, the three brands collectively sold 148,664 fully electric vehicles through June.

BMW has always prided itself on offering a wide range of powertrain options, from small gasoline engines to powerful plug-in hybrids. The company’s journey towards electric mobility includes unique solutions like the i3 with a range extender and a future hydrogen-powered X5 set for release in 2028.

The shift towards electric vehicles is inevitable, driven by stringent emissions regulations. BMW has been expanding its electric lineup, with EVs accounting for a growing share of total sales, rising from 4.1% in 2021 to 17.9% in 2025.

Despite a slight setback in the first half of 2026, where EV demand decreased by 14.6%, BMW remains committed to its 2030 target. The company aims to have half of its total vehicle sales as fully electric by the end of the decade.

BMW’s Vision for 2030: Electric Vehicles Across the Board

By 2030, BMW plans to offer an electric vehicle in every segment it competes in. This ambitious goal will be supported by Neue Klasse innovations and the success of current models like the iX3, which has garnered significant orders in Europe.

New electric models like the i3 sedan and upcoming iX5 and i3 Touring are set to further expand BMW’s electric vehicle lineup. Despite niche models like the iX4 and i4 Convertible, BMW is focused on achieving a substantial increase in EV sales by 2030.

Future models such as the i7 facelift, iX7, and rumored iX6 will cater to luxury segments, while affordable offerings like the next-generation iX1, i1 hatchback, and i2 sedan aim to attract a broader audience towards electric mobility.

Despite challenges in markets like China, BMW remains optimistic about achieving a 50% share of electric vehicle sales by 2030, signaling a transformative decade ahead for the automaker and the electric vehicle industry.
