Tim Cook Joins Trump’s China Delegation
Tim Cook is set to transition into the role of executive chairman at Apple, but before that, he may be embarking on a significant diplomatic mission alongside US President Donald Trump. According to a recent report from Semafor, Trump has invited several top CEOs, including Cook, to join him on a diplomatic mission to China. The list of invitees also includes executives from Qualcomm, Blackstone, Citigroup, and Visa, with more expected to be added in the coming days.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, and US Ambassador to China David Perdue have been recommending attendees for the trip. Trump has been casually mentioning to executives that he will see them in Beijing, fueling corporate interest in the mission.
The report indicates that the administration plans to invite CEOs from companies like Nvidia and Apple, without specifically naming Cook. Despite the upcoming transition, Cook remains actively involved as Apple’s CEO until September 1. The purpose of Trump’s summit in China is to strengthen his relationship with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and extend the trade truce agreed upon during their previous meeting in South Korea.
Discussions are also underway about initiating a formal dialogue on the AI arms race, a topic of interest to Apple. If Cook accepts the invitation, it would not be surprising, as he has a history of participating in such events and maintaining a good relationship with Trump.
Apple’s announcement regarding Cook’s transition mentioned that he would continue to engage with policymakers globally from his new role as executive chairman. This includes maintaining ties with President Trump, a relationship that has been described as positive. This strategic decision allows Ternus, Apple’s incoming CEO, to focus on product development without being burdened by political engagements.
