Google will reportedly let 15 superfans test unreleased Pixel phones

Google to Let Fans Test New Pixel Phones Before Official Release

In the tech world, there are a few certainties: death, taxes, and Google’s upcoming Pixel phone getting extensively leaked before its official announcement. Over the years, various generations of Pixel devices have been unboxed, disassembled, and even reviewed by eager fans before Google could unveil them.

However, Google seems to be turning the tables on leakers by offering a unique opportunity to 15 lucky fans. According to a report by Bloomberg, Google plans to allow these fans to test new Pixel phones while they are still in the development stage.

Although Google has not officially confirmed this initiative, Bloomberg states that the company has drafted official rules for a contest named “The Trusted Tester program.” The 15 winners selected will play a role in shaping a Pixel phone that is currently in development. These testers will be required to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) and use the phones in special protective cases designed to conceal their appearance while in public.

While it is common for companies to conduct internal testing of unreleased hardware with protective disguises, involving fans in this process is unprecedented. Allowing fans to take a Pixel-class phone out in public raises questions about potential leaks and spoilers, although the risk appears to be minimal. In recent years, Google has adopted a proactive approach by revealing its own phones early as part of a strategic shift to combat leaks.

It remains unclear when fans will have the opportunity to participate in this testing program, which specific phone will be involved, or when the devices will be available for testing. According to Bloomberg, the program is targeted towards “Pixel Superfans,” suggesting that membership in Google’s official fan group may be a prerequisite for participation.
