The Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ Sports Cars Get Upgraded

The Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ sports cars have received enhancements in terms of new technology, equipment, and cosmetic changes. The updated Toyota GR86 is set to hit Australian showrooms later this month with prices remaining unchanged.

Japan recently announced changes for the GR86, with orders for the updated coupe opening later this month. Toyota Australia has confirmed that the upgraded model will also be available in Australia, stating, “Toyota Australia is pleased to confirm a raft of enhancements for the GR86, including the introduction of a distinctive Moon Slate Grey paint color, further chassis improvements, updated interior trim, and additional safety features. The updated GR86 will arrive in Australian showrooms later this month.”

Expected changes for the Australian models include improvements to throttle control settings for a more linear accelerator pedal response, revised electric power steering calibration for better stability in high-speed corners and rough surfaces, and the introduction of the Moon Slate Grey exterior paint option.

Toyota has also enhanced cabin quality with redesigned switches and upgraded materials for improved ease of use. The interior trim has been redesigned with more red accents around the driver’s seat, reminiscent of the previous-generation Toyota 86 cabin.

Additionally, the GR86’s EyeSight driver-assist technology, developed by Subaru, now features a new triple-camera setup for a broader field of view. The GR86 and BRZ are closely related models, with minor specification and tuning differences.

Subaru Japan has announced similar changes for the BRZ, but Subaru Australia has not yet confirmed these upgrades for local showrooms. The BRZ was updated earlier this year, including the introduction of the limited edition BRZ tS Kiiro.

The GR86 and BRZ are both powered by a 174kW/250Nm ‘FA24’ 2.4-liter naturally aspirated horizontally opposed four-cylinder petrol engine, with a choice of six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions driving the rear wheels.

Pricing for the GR86 starts at $43,940 before on-road costs, while the BRZ starts at $47,890 plus on-roads. Toyota sold 383 GR86s in Australia between January and July 2026, with Subaru not far behind at 379 BRZ sales during the same period.
