2026 Mercedes-Benz GLB Electric: A Fast and Electric Ride
Car manufacturers are shifting away from the trend of EV-specific branding policies that were popular in the mid-2000s, opting instead to return to heritage nameplates. Mercedes-Benz, for example, is moving away from the ‘EQ’ sub-group of models it initially established. The second-generation GLB mid-size SUV, for instance, will no longer be known as the EQB but will now be called the GLB Electric.
This change in branding is part of a broader trend in the industry, where car manufacturers are moving away from new-fangled EV-specific branding policies that were popular in the mid-2000s. Instead, they are returning to heritage nameplates in a hurry. For example, Mercedes-Benz is rowing back from the so-called ‘EQ’ sub-group of models it was initially determined to set up.
The decision to rebrand the GLB Electric as such was made to simplify the naming convention and align it more closely with the heritage of the brand. The GLB Electric, available in Europe in two formats with one big battery, represents one of the most affordable ways to get into a seven-seat electric vehicle from a premium auto brand, while still maintaining a relatively small footprint on the road.
In terms of pricing, Mercedes-Benz has yet to finalize the local pricing and spec levels for the new GLB set to go on sale in Australia in the final quarter of this year. However, the outgoing Mk1 GLB is currently priced from $72,900 before on-road costs, with the electric EQB spin-off retailing for over $90,000. The new GLB, Electric or otherwise, is expected to command higher price tags.
The GLB Electric’s cabin features the MBUX Superscreen, a large dashboard display that varies in size depending on the options chosen. The cabin’s material quality is fine, with sharp graphics and intuitive menu layout. The GLB Electric also offers ample passenger space, especially in the second row, thanks to its boxy exterior shape and high roof.
Under the bonnet, the GLB Electric comes in two main variants: the 250+ with a single-motor, rear-wheel drive setup, and the more potent all-wheel drive 350 4Matic with dual motors. Both versions use the same 85.5kWh NMC lithium-ion battery pack, offering a claimed range of 631km for the 250+ and 614km for the 350 4Matic.
The GLB Electric is equipped with advanced driver assistance systems and sturdy construction on the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA) chassis. While it has not yet been rated by safety organizations like Euro NCAP or ANCAP, recent Mercedes-Benz models have received full five-star ratings in safety tests.
In conclusion, the new Mercedes-Benz GLB Electric offers impressive packaging and comfort, with a serene driving experience. However, its driving dynamics may not fully embody the Mercedes-Benz brand identity, raising questions about its premium positioning in the market. The starting price approaching $100,000 in Australia may be a point of consideration for potential buyers.
Overall, the GLB Electric presents a compelling option in the mid-size electric SUV segment, but its ability to stand out among competitors remains to be seen.
