Honda Unveils Two Concept Cars Set for Production by 2028

During a recent briefing to address their financial struggles, Honda revealed two concept cars that are scheduled to enter production by 2028. The first of these is the Honda Hybrid Sedan Prototype, boasting a fastback design that belies its sedan classification. While it may initially resemble the next-generation Accord, recent reports indicate that the current model will see an extension in its lifespan, with the new version now expected in early 2030.

On the other hand, the Civic is in need of an earlier replacement, as the current generation was launched in 2021, while the eleventh-generation Accord dates back to 2023. The Hybrid Sedan Prototype appears substantial in size, hinting at a longer and wider upcoming Civic model.

The Acura Hybrid SUV Prototype, on the other hand, seems to be a clear replacement for the Acura RDX, which made its debut in 2019. Historically, the RDX and Civic have shared a platform and similar sizes. Both prototypes, along with their production versions, are built on a flexible new platform designed to accommodate Honda’s next-generation hybrid technology.

Honda is shifting its focus towards hybrid propulsion after canceling several models, including the 0 Series Saloon and SUV, Acura RSX, and Afeela models in March. The company now plans to introduce 15 new hybrid models, primarily in North America, by 2030, with some larger vehicles featuring a new V6 hybrid setup. To support these new models, Honda will repurpose a joint venture factory with LG Energy Solution to manufacture battery packs.

Honda’s Commitment to Sustainability

Despite scaling back its electric vehicle ambitions, Honda remains dedicated to launching electric cars, particularly in the mini-vehicle category in Japan. Additionally, the company plans to introduce plug-in hybrids and EVs in China using platforms provided by local partners. Honda is also emphasizing affordable sub-4m models in India but did not mention the upcoming 0 Series Alpha SUV in their recent announcement.

Honda aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 through a multi-faceted approach that includes EVs, hybrid vehicles, carbon-neutral fuels, and carbon-offset technologies. The company has abandoned its previous target of halting production of internal combustion engine cars by 2040 in favor of a more comprehensive strategy to reach its 2050 goal.

Financial Challenges and Outlook

On the financial front, Honda reported a significant operating loss of ¥414.3 billion (A$3.6bn) for the year ending March 2026, a stark contrast to the previous year’s profit of ¥1.2 trillion (A$10.6bn). The majority of this loss is attributed to the costs associated with the cancellation of Honda’s North American EV plans.

Despite these challenges, Honda remains optimistic about its future direction and commitment to sustainability and innovation in the automotive industry.
