Automatic Rollback: Windows Update Fixes Faulty Drivers
Microsoft Improving Windows 11 Update Experience
In a bid to enhance user experience, Microsoft is striving to address issues with Windows 11 updates. One key improvement is the ability to indefinitely pause updates. Moreover, Microsoft is introducing a new feature that automatically reverts problematic drivers installed via Windows Update.
A new feature called “Cloud-Initiated Driver Recovery” has been developed by Microsoft. This feature can replace a faulty driver on a PC with a previously functional driver sourced from Windows Update. Currently, Windows 11 users are required to manually roll back drivers or wait for hardware vendors to release updates. The new feature aims to streamline this process by automating driver recovery.
Garrett Duchesne, principal program manager at Microsoft, explains, “When a driver is flagged for quality issues during our evaluation process, Microsoft can now trigger a cloud-based recovery action. This action replaces the problematic driver on affected devices without requiring manual intervention from users or hardware partners.”
The new Windows Update, currently undergoing testing with Microsoft’s hardware partners, is set to roll out gradually in September. Additionally, Microsoft is streamlining the update process by allowing users to extend pause dates indefinitely, skip updates during initial device setup, and restart or shut down a PC without being forced to install pending updates.
