The Impact of Apple: Why It Matters

Outgoing Apple CEO Tim Cook has recently accompanied President Donald Trump and other US executives on a visit to Beijing to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Despite Cook’s upcoming departure from Apple in September, Trump personally invited him to join the trip, as reported by Mactrast.

This visit marks the first time a sitting US president has visited China in almost a decade, with the trip scheduled to take place from May 13 to 15.

Although Cook did not travel with Trump on Air Force One, The Wall Street Journal notes his presence at China’s welcoming ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Videos on social media also captured Cook walking alongside Elon Musk and exchanging greetings with reporters.

Why Did Cook Decide to Go to China?

Cook’s decision to join the delegation was influenced by the simple fact that when the US President requests a “plus one” for a trip to Beijing, it’s hard to refuse. Turning down such an invitation could potentially lead to complications for Apple in the future. Given Trump’s reputation for being vindictive when things don’t go his way, Cook likely considered this when agreeing to accompany Trump to China.

There have been instances where Cook complied with Trump’s requests in the past, such as dining with the Saudi Crown Prince and making personal donations to Trump’s initiatives. The official reason for the trip is to facilitate business deals between Chinese and US companies, with discussions expected to cover topics like AI, exports, trade, and the US-Iran conflict.

Aside from Cook, Trump also brought along several other US executives, including Larry Fink from BlackRock, Stephen Schwarzman from Blackstone, Kelly Ortberg from Boeing, and others. The trip aims to strengthen business ties between the two countries.

There have been reports of tensions among US executives, with conflicts between Cook and Musk over various issues. Additionally, a Goldman Sachs executive, whose firm recently ended its relationship with Apple, is part of the delegation.

China’s willingness to collaborate with the US in a spirit of equality and mutual benefit has been highlighted by the country’s foreign ministry spokesman, Guo Jiakun.
