McLaren Teases New Car with Possible Manual Transmission

McLaren recently shared a video on their Instagram showcasing what appears to be a new car featuring a manual transmission. The video, over a minute long, highlights one of the limited M6GT prototypes from the late 1960s, hinting at possible inspiration for their upcoming model.

If the new car indeed includes a manual transmission, it would mark the first time in nearly three decades that a McLaren vehicle offers a manual gearbox.

The video clearly displays the McLaren M6GT, a vehicle developed towards the end of the 1960s as part of a series of four road cars designed for Le Mans competition. The M6GT drew inspiration from the successful M6A race car from the 1960s Can-Am racing era.

Led by the company’s founder, Bruce McLaren, the M6GT project saw only a few prototypes produced before being halted in 1970 following McLaren’s untimely passing.

McLaren Special Operations (MSO) previously unveiled a modern interpretation of the M6GT, staying true to the original design by incorporating vintage components and reference materials to recreate a retro-inspired road car.

The iconic M6GT, envisioned by Bruce McLaren, appears to be making a comeback. The Instagram teaser seamlessly transitions from historical footage to a glimpse of the upcoming car. Bruce McLaren’s voice can be heard in the background, expressing his aspirations of creating a road car. “Somewhere down the line, I think it is bound to happen,” Bruce McLaren’s voice resonates.

McLaren has not disclosed the name of the vehicle or provided details on its powertrain and features. The official unveiling is scheduled for August 14, 2026, potentially during the Monterey Car Week festival. Stay tuned for further updates on this exciting release.
