Revolutionizing Agriculture: Perplant Secures €1 Million Funding to Implement AI Technology in Tractors for Sustainable Farming Practices
Perplant: Danish AgTech Startup Raises €1 Million to Democratise AI in Agriculture
Perplant, a pioneering Danish AgTech startup, is on a mission to revolutionize agriculture by democratizing AI technology to support sustainable farming practices. The company has successfully secured €1 million in investment to fuel its innovative approach.
The recent funding round saw strong support from private angel investors and industry leaders with extensive experience in agriculture and retail. Additionally, institutional financing from the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark, along with project grants from the European Space Agency and Innovation Fund Denmark, further bolstered Perplant’s financial standing.
CEO and co-founder of Perplant, Rasmus Emil Hansen, expressed the company’s vision, stating, “When our AI drives across the field, it documents the field’s variation, every single plant, and groundwater-sensitive areas. It removes the bureaucracy for the farmer and ensures that we can shut off the sprayer precisely over groundwater-sensitive areas with centimetre precision,” highlighting the practical benefits of their AI-based technology.
Established in 2022 by Rasmus Emil Hansen and Sumod Nandanwar, Perplant specializes in developing AI-driven infrastructure for agriculture. Their cutting-edge technology enables real-time monitoring and precise spraying through Edge AI sensors mounted on tractors. By equipping tractors with advanced “eyes,” Perplant’s system significantly reduces herbicide usage by up to 90% and fertilizer consumption by 30%.
The company’s proprietary solution involves a box mounted on the tractor’s roof, where artificial intelligence scans the field in real-time, ensuring targeted spraying only where necessary. This optimized approach not only minimizes the use of pesticides and fertilizers but also enhances harvest yields.
Perplant claims that their technology can lead to savings of up to 90% in herbicides and 30% in fertilizers. For an average 200-hectare farm, this could translate to an annual profit increase of approximately €36,000, with the investment being recouped within the first season of implementation.
Unlike traditional satellite imagery that offers a resolution of 10–30 meters, Perplant’s sensors provide a much higher resolution of 2–10 centimeters. This level of detail allows the system to capture actual photos of each plant, generating verification-ready data for regulatory bodies, financial institutions, and insurance companies.
Perplant has already mapped over 200,000 hectares across Europe, surpassing the data collected by all agricultural drones in Denmark combined. This extensive coverage has created the largest precision dataset in the Nordics, showcasing the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
Emil Hansen emphasized the importance of Perplant’s technology, stating, “No satellite or drone can deliver this level of detail at a scale that truly impacts the global food chain. By transforming every tractor into an intelligent data center, we provide the essential factual foundation that farmers and authorities require to support their environmental efforts,” underscoring the significance of their contribution.
Currently, Perplant operates in multiple countries including Denmark, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Spain, Ireland, and Chile, with plans for expansion into the USA. The company, supported by Antler, The Footprint Firm, and strategic business investors, boasts a team of 15 dedicated employees driving the company’s growth and success.
