Unveiling the Ultimate Speedster: The BMW M2 xDrive MotoGP M Award Champion
The Exciting Unveiling of the BMW M2 with xDrive at the Grand Prix of Hungary
The Grand Prix of Hungary witnessed an exhilarating event on Saturday as BMW showcased the global unveiling of the BMW M2 with xDrive. This stunning car was revealed as the coveted prize for the 2026 BMW M Award, an annual trophy presented to MotoGP’s fastest qualifier since 2003.
At the Balaton Park Circuit, MotoGP’s Chief Sporting Officer, Carlos Ezpeleta, and Zsuzsanna Pocs, Head of Marketing at BMW Group Hungary, presented the car to the audience. Subsequently, content creator Becky Evans and MotoGP rider Jorge Martin took the car for a spin on the track in the “BMW M Racing Balance” challenge. This challenge involved the driver aiming for the fastest lap while the passenger attempted to keep a bowl of balls from spilling.
Introducing the Impressive M2 xDrive
The highlight of the event was the introduction of all-wheel drive on the M2 model for the first time. The G87 model features a powerful S58-derived 3.0-liter inline-six engine that delivers 473 hp to the rear wheels under normal driving conditions. The front axle engages only when necessary, enhancing performance. The M2 xDrive boasts impressive acceleration figures, reaching 0-60 mph in just 3.6 seconds (3.3 with rollout). The car can sprint from 0-200 km/h in 12.8 seconds and has a top speed of 155 mph, extendable to 177 mph with the M Driver’s Package.
European-market versions of the M2 xDrive are equipped with the updated S58 engine featuring BMW M Ignite, a pre-chamber combustion system developed for enhanced performance. The European models produce 480 hp on RON 98 fuel with a compression ratio of 10.5:1. The US variants, on the other hand, do not have M Ignite and generate 473 hp at 6,250 rpm with 443 lb-ft of torque between 2,700 and 5,620 rpm, running on 91/93 octane fuel.
Understanding the BMW M Awards
The BMW M Award operates on a straightforward principle, where points are awarded after each qualifying session using the same scale as race results. The rider accumulating the most points at the end of the season is awarded the prestigious car. Notable winners include Marc Marquez with eight wins, Francesco Bagnaia with three wins, and past champions like Valentino Rossi, Casey Stoner, and Jorge Lorenzo.
The award presentation takes place at the season finale, ensuring an exciting conclusion to the MotoGP season. With Marquez in contention for the championship, a ninth M Award victory for him remains a possibility. The official winner of the 2026 BMW M Award will be revealed in November, adding to the anticipation in the MotoGP community.
