Travis Kalanick’s Atoms might be getting into the robotaxi business

Travis Kalanick’s Atoms Secures $1.7 Billion Funding Round, Eyes Growth in Autonomous Vehicle Industry

During the summer, Atoms, founded by Uber’s Travis Kalanick, announced a substantial $1.7 billion funding round spearheaded by Andreessen Horowitz. Despite this significant investment, Kalanick remained somewhat secretive about the startup’s precise goals.

A recent report by the Financial Times sheds more light on Atoms’ strategic direction. The company is gearing up for an extensive recruitment drive and potential acquisitions, positioning itself to become a key player in the autonomous vehicle sector.

According to the FT, Atoms has engaged in discussions with Uber regarding the potential utilization of its robotaxi technology by the ride-hailing giant. This move aligns with Uber’s existing partnerships with various autonomous vehicle firms. Additionally, Uber has already injected $100 million into Atoms, a detail previously verified by TechCrunch.

While Atoms’ plans extend beyond robotaxis, the focus on this technology echoes Kalanick’s characterization of the funding round as “unfinished business.”

Notably, Atoms recently acquired Pronto, an autonomous mining startup headed by Anthony Levandowski, Uber’s former self-driving chief. Levandowski faced legal issues for misappropriating trade secrets but was later pardoned by former President Donald Trump.
