Amazon CEO’s Anthropic Fable Worries: A Tech Industry Crisis
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy’s Involvement in Security Risks with Anthropic’s AI Models
Reports indicate that Amazon CEO Andy Jassy was in communication with senior Trump administration officials regarding security concerns related to Anthropic’s advanced AI models. This led to a government order that forced the AI lab to take its newest models offline.
Amazon’s significant investment in Anthropic, amounting to $13 billion since 2023 with plans for further investment up to $20 billion, adds complexity to the situation.
According to sources, Jassy informed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and others about Amazon researchers using Anthropic’s Fable 5 to gather data that could potentially be utilized in cyberattacks.
Amazon reportedly shared these findings with administration officials in response to the security risks identified.
An Amazon spokesperson mentioned that it’s common for governments to seek advice from the company on security matters, given its role as a leading cloud provider. However, specific details of such discussions are not disclosed.
The government’s directive highlighted a method for exploiting Anthropic’s Fable 5, resulting in the suspension of access for foreign nationals and the need for Anthropic to disable both models to comply.
Amazon, along with other companies, expressed concerns to administration officials before the order was issued.
Anthropic, while complying with the government’s directive, disagreed with the necessity of the action, stating that the identified vulnerabilities were relatively simple and could be found using other publicly available models.
Independent experts questioned the severity of the findings, suggesting that while Fable could reveal security bugs, they were not considered dangerous cybersecurity information.
As of now, Fable 5 remains unavailable to Anthropic’s Claude users.
This incident adds to the ongoing tensions between Anthropic and the Trump administration, which previously classified the company’s model as a supply-chain risk.
