Amazon MGM Studios has decided to step back from the film “Artificial,” which delves into the life of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Reports from Puck, Variety, and other sources indicate that the studio believes the film would be better suited for release by a different production house.

The movie, helmed by director Luca Guadagnino and starring Andrew Garfield as Altman, revolves around the period when Altman was dismissed from his role at OpenAI in 2023 and subsequently reinstated. Described as “‘The Social Network,’ but for the AI era,” the film has garnered significant attention.

According to Variety, Amazon MGM had invested approximately $40 million in the project and had conducted test screenings in four markets. The unexpected decision to pull the film, originally slated for a 2027 debut, left the filmmakers stunned, as reported by The New York Times.

In a move reinforcing its commitment to AI, Amazon had announced a $50 billion investment in OpenAI earlier in the year. The partnership includes a deepening of technical collaboration between OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Amazon Web Services, with OpenAI planning to leverage AWS for its AI operations.

Despite the setback, Amazon has expressed its intention to assist the film’s team in finding a new distribution platform. However, both Netflix and Focus Features have reportedly declined to acquire “Artificial,” as per The Hollywood Reporter.

Insights from Puck suggest that Amazon MGM Studios’ head, Mike Hopkins, found the final cut of the film to be darker in tone than anticipated, leading to the decision to discontinue the project. While Amazon provided no official rationale for the move, the statement hinted at creative differences.

Director Luca Guadagnino, known for his work on “Call Me by Your Name,” has collaborated with Amazon MGM on past projects. Amazon, in a statement, praised Guadagnino’s talent and expressed a desire to maintain their ongoing partnership.

Noteworthy cast members of “Artificial” include Monica Barbaro as former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, Yura Borisov as former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, and Ike Barinholtz portraying Elon Musk.
