Volkswagen to Introduce Apple Wallet Digital Car Keys, Leak Reveals
Following the debut of Apple’s “Car Key” in 2020, there was a perception that the technology would be limited to high-end or luxury vehicles. However, in the past year, there has been a significant expansion of the technology, with Volkswagen poised to join the trend soon.
A recent discovery by MacRumors revealed that Volkswagen is preparing to introduce Apple’s digital car keys to some of its vehicles. While details about specific models and timelines are still unknown, this development is a promising sign for Volkswagen enthusiasts.
This isn’t the first time that backend code has hinted at new additions to Apple Wallet. In December, similar code for Toyota foreshadowed the official adoption of the 2026 RAV4 into the car key family. This suggests that Volkswagen may follow a similar timeline for implementing the technology in its vehicles.
Car manufacturers often introduce features like digital car keys gradually, starting with their best-selling models. This cautious approach extends beyond car keys; for example, Nissan initially launched wireless CarPlay exclusively on the Rogue before expanding to other models.
Apple initially introduced a limited version of car key in 2020, exclusive to BMW vehicles and operating over NFC. This required users to physically interact with their iPhones to unlock the car. However, advancements such as Digital Key Plus with Ultra Wideband support have made the unlocking process more seamless.
While BMW was the first to offer digital car keys, other manufacturers have since followed suit. Brands like Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, and performance-oriented brands like Porsche and Rivian have integrated the technology into their vehicles.
The past year has seen a rapid expansion of digital car key support in everyday North American vehicles. Brands like Lexus, Acura, Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC are on Apple’s roadmap for implementing the technology. However, some brands like Tesla, Ford, and Japanese manufacturers have yet to adopt digital car keys.
As the automotive industry continues to embrace digital innovations, the integration of Apple’s digital car keys in a wide range of vehicles is a testament to the evolving landscape of car technology.
Despite some brands lagging behind in adopting the technology, the overall trend towards digital car keys signals a shift towards more convenient and connected driving experiences for consumers.
